Technology has revolutionized access to mental health services for people around the world. However, the ethical challenges presented by the rapid expansion of the use of technology in this field cannot be overstated.

Overview

This training will explore the ethical challenges related to video/tele therapy services, as well as extra-office communications through texting, emailing,and app-based communications. Special attention will be paid to interactions with clients in virtual spaces that were not previously considered, because they were not technologically possible.

This course is not New York State specific, and can satisfy ethics and boundaries training requirements for any state.

This course is designed to meet the NYS requirement of mental health professionals to receive 3 hours of training on maintaining appropriate professional boundaries (effective April 2023).

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the ethical and legal responsibility of mental and behavioral health professionals to maintain appropriate professional boundaries with clients when using technology in their practice.
  2. Describe the ethical and legal responsibility of mental and behavioral health professionals to protect client confidential information when using technology in their practice.
  3. Apply a framework to avoid boundary conflicts when using technology in their professional practice, whenever possible.
  4. Apply a framework to avoid breach of client confidentiality when using technology in their professional practice, whenever possible.
  5. Explain how to demonstrate that a client has not been exploited or coerced, intentionally or unintentionally, through the use of technology in professional practice.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations made seven working days or fewer before the event for any reason—or for no-shows. We can provide credit towards a future workshop up to 24 hours before the event. After that, no credit will be issued.
