HealthNets
HealthNets unites campuses, communities, and schools to collectively improve youth health — serving as a professional organization for health educators.
Our History
Dr. Monica Homer and Ms. Mary Barrese, two faculty members from Adelphi University, began the HealthNets organization in the Fall of 1997 by inviting all health educators on Long Island to convene for an informal get-together. The informal get-togethers have expanded into a professional network of health educators who want to share ideas, develop cutting-edge curricula based on current New York State standards, and grow as health educators.
HealthNets started out meeting twice a semester, once in Nassau County and once in Suffolk County to learn together and share ideas. However, over time, it became more effective to have an annual conference which we have been doing for 15 years.
How Can HealthNets Support District and Teacher Needs?
In the fall of 2001, HealthNets hosted its first annual Partnerships in Health Conference, co-sponsored by HealthNets and Adelphi University. This one-day conference was the first in a series of conferences and workshops that further promote the goals of HealthNets and meet the needs of health educators.
HealthNets continually aims to increase participation and to provide professional development opportunities for health educators. Such a partnership fosters collaboration among Adelphi University faculty, school districts, and health education professionals.
