Foundations of Practice in Reproductive Mental Health

CE Credits: 1

This introductory module lays the groundwork for the field of reproductive mental health and the critical role of mental health professionals within fertility and reproductive medicine. Participants will explore the history and evolution of the specialty, from early psychosomatic theories to today’s evidence-based, collaborative models of care.

We will review the medical foundations of infertility, including common causes, diagnostic testing, and treatment options, to ensure clinicians have the baseline knowledge necessary for informed, empathetic support. The session also introduces core psychological frameworks—such as the “reproductive story,” grief and loss models, and stress and coping approaches—that help explain why infertility is often experienced as a profound life crisis.

Attendees will learn how infertility affects individuals, couples, and families across diverse backgrounds, and how reproductive mental health professionals provide support, counseling, and assessment throughout these journeys. By the end of this module, learners will have a strong foundation for understanding the clinical, emotional, and ethical dimensions of this growing specialty.

The Role of the Reproductive Mental Health Professional in Third-Party Reproduction

CE Credits: 1

This module explores the complex and evolving role of the reproductive mental health professional (RMHP) in third-party reproduction. Clinicians will learn how to navigate the ethical, psychological, and procedural aspects of working with egg and sperm donors, embryo donors, gestational carriers, and intended parents.

Through historical context and ASRM-guided practices, participants will gain a clear understanding of the RMHP’s multifaceted role as evaluator, counselor, gatekeeper, and psychoeducator within interdisciplinary fertility teams.

Compounded Grief: Working With Clients Experiencing Both Infertility and Reproductive Loss

CE Credits: 1

This module explores the unique emotional and psychological challenges experienced by individuals and couples facing both infertility and reproductive loss. These clients often navigate layered and intersecting forms of grief, trauma, identity disruption, and relational strain—creating a level of distress that differs significantly from experiencing either condition alone.

Through clinical research and conceptual frameworks, the module examines how compounded grief develops and how it manifests across mood, anxiety, trauma responses, and interpersonal functioning. Learners are introduced to key theoretical models—including Kübler-Ross’s stages of grief, the reproductive story, and the resiliency model—that support assessment and case formulation.

The module concludes with evidence-based treatment approaches, including CBT, ACT, narrative therapy, grief counseling, and psychopharmacology considerations. By integrating these frameworks and interventions, reproductive mental health professionals are equipped to provide compassionate, informed care that promotes healing, meaning-making, and resilience.
