This course will anchor students in the foundations of attachment theory, which is in part rooted in object relations and psychodynamic theories and will focus on how we become individual humans in the context of relationships with significant caregivers.

Recent research has overwhelmingly demonstrated the effectiveness of using this framework to support improved caregiver-child communication and growth in dyads. This course is taught by researchers and clinicians from Canada who have incorporated these core concepts in developing the Attachment Video-feedback Intervention (AVI), which aims to enhance parental sensitivity, parent-child interaction quality, and children’s full development (socio-emotional, cognitive, and neurophysiological). Parents have shown improved ability to mentalize and become more sensitive to their children’s attachment and exploration needs. AVI has been shown to be effective in scientific studies for use with children 0-7 at high psycho-social risk and with autistic children. Clinical cases also suggest the AVI’s value for children aged 8 through 12.
