Revisiting Becoming Attached
The seminar will explore the historical relationship between attachment and psychoanalysis, examining the dynamics of hostility and rapprochement that have shaped this field.
It will delve into the unlikely collaboration between John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth, as well as the contributions of others who followed in their footsteps. Participants will also engage with the ongoing controversy surrounding attachment theory and its founders, considering the challenges they faced from various realms of developmental thinking. The seminar will address the importance of parental guidance in mourning, from illness to the death of a loved one, and its impact on the quality of attachment. Attention will also be given to the concept of the insecure base, highlighting both secure and insecure aspects of the self in adulthood, and the role of defenses. Finally, new developments in affect regulation, affective neurobiology, and mentalization will be explored, offering participants insight into the evolving landscape of attachment theory. A case presentation will also be discussed.
