Masculinity, Homophobia, and Gay Male Non-monogamy: Dynamics in Gay Male Relationships
This class will focus on the interplay between two of the most pervasive issues facing contemporary gay male couples: the impact of gender and sexuality as reactions to historical, societal attitudes toward male homosexuality on the couple’s capacity for developing emotional and sexual intimacy and the growing trend toward non-monogamous relationships.
The discussion will begin from the premise that each member of a gay couple has been raised and, for the most part, continues to live in a homophobic society that impacts their relationship to their own and each other’s sexuality and gender expression. From this context, non-monogamous relations will be considered as potential sequelae to foundational traumas and agentic attempts at coping with them.
