Couples and The Neurobiology of Psychological Change: A Psychotherapist’s Perspective
Freud was a neuroscientist before he developed psychoanalysis. In 1895, he outlined his ideas for investigating the essence of human subjectivity.
Over 50 years later, this work was finally published as “Project for a Scientific Psychology.” Because of the scientific limitations of neuroscience in the late 19th and early 20th century, he abandoned the project and went on to develop Psychoanalysis. The new project gave him the opportunity to expand and expound upon many of his intuitions about the human psyche. Many of these have been validated by contemporary neuroscience. This course looks at some of the developments in neuroscience and how they better inform psychodynamic psychotherapy.
