Student Rights and Responsibilities

The information below describes the rights and responsibilities of students receiving financial aid assistance and, specifically, federal student aid at Adelphi University.

Student’s Right to Know:

  • Students have the right to know the criteria for continued student eligibility for each type of financial aid awarded.
  • Students have the right to know the satisfactory academic progress standards that students must meet to receive financial aid assistance, and the required criteria to re-establish eligibility if a student fails to meet satisfactory academic progress.
  • Students have the right to know the method by which financial aid disbursements will be made to the students and the frequency of those disbursements.
  • Students have the right to know the method the school provides for Pell-eligible students to obtain or purchase required books and supplies by the seventh day of a payment period.
  • Students have the right to know the general terms and conditions are applicable to any employment provided to a student as part of the student’s financial aid package.
  • Students have the right to know the terms of any loan received, a sample loan repayment schedule for sample loans, the necessity for paying loans, and the loan exit counseling information the school provides.

Student’s Responsibilities:

  • I agree to notify the One-Stop Student Services Center of any changes to the information used to determine my financial aid award.
  • I agree to respond to requests for information from the One-Stop Student Services Center.
  • I agree to review the College Financing Plan and acknowledge the enrollment requirements to receive certain types of financial aid (such as federal loan entrance counseling requirements).
  • I agree to notify the One-Stop Student Services Center if at any time I stop attending classes and officially take a leave of absence or withdraw from the university. I also understand it is advised to speak with the One-Stop Student Services Center to see if my withdrawal will impact my current aid award.
  • I agree to notify the One-Stop Student Services Centers if I am, or I become incarcerated while I am in attendance at Adelphi University and receiving financial aid.
  • I agree to notify the One-Stop Student Services Center if I (or a parent who has borrowed from the Federal Parent (PLUS loan program) am convicted of or pled guilty or no-contest to a crime involving fraud in obtaining federal student aid funds.
  • I agree to notify the One-Stop Student Services Center if I (or a parent) who has borrowed from the Federal Parent (PLUS loan program) am subject to a lien for a debt owed to the United States.
  • I agree to use federal student aid funds received during the award year solely for educational expenses related to attendance during that year.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

To be eligible for federal, state, and University financial aid programs, students are required to make satisfactory academic progress. These standards are separate and distinct from the University’s Academic Degree Requirements and Policies as stated in the University Bulletin.

These guidelines are in accordance with those required by federal regulations for recipients of a federal grant, work, and loan programs, including the Federal Direct Parent (PLUS) Loan. These standards also apply to state aid or state-funded financial aid programs in accordance with New York State.

Recipients of Adelphi University tuition benefits who are not receiving any other federal, state, or University funds are not bound by these guidelines.

  1. Students must reapply for financial assistance annually, as it is granted for each academic year. 
    • All awards depend on full-time student status, unless otherwise specified, and are subject to the student’s ability to meet the specific requirements of each award and any conditions related to admission to Adelphi. 
  2. A valid Institutional Student Information Report (ISIR) must be received from the federal government before the last day of enrollment for the academic year in order to receive federal financial aid. 
  3. Estimated awards that rely on funding from federal and state governments may fluctuate
    • These awards may not be reflected on the tuition bill. 
  4. If an application is selected for federal verification, the student may be required to submit additional information.
    • The disbursement of any federal assistance will be delayed until the verification process is complete, and the amount of the award may be adjusted based on the information provided. 
  5. Financial awards will be credited to the Adelphi tuition account. \
    • Federal Pell Grants and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) will be disbursed no earlier than 10 days before the start of each semester. 
    • All other awards, including student loans, will also be issued after the end of the add/drop period. 
  6. New York State HESC (Higher Education Services Corporation)Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) awards and state scholarships, combined with institutional awards, may not exceed the cost of tuition in accordance with New York state and Adelphi guidelines.  
    • Students may also be subject to federal income tax on any amount exceeding tuition or grants designated specifically for room and board. Scholarships designated for tuition only will be adjusted if additional tuition-only funds are received. 
  7. Students must continue to meet the requirements for each award received. 
    • Grants (i.e.Adelphi University Panther Grant, and athletic and alumni awards)
      • A minimum GPA of 2.0 must be maintained each semester. If a student’s GPA falls below this threshold, they may lose their grant. 
    • Some awards, like endowed and restricted grants, will only renew if funding is available and do not automatically renew each year. Scholarships have varying renewal requirements each semester. 
  8. Federal Work-Study
    • Students awarded Federal Work-Study should start by visiting Handshake and/or Adelphi’s Center for Career and Professional Development, where job postings are available.
    • It is advisable to go before the semester begins to get a head start on job applications. Once students begin working, they will receive a biweekly paycheck, and these earnings will not be deducted from their tuition bill. 
  9. Federal Loans
    • For the most current information on federal loans, including how to apply or cancel loans, students should visit our financial aid website or check their initial financial aid package.
  10. Withdrawals
    • If students withdraw from all courses, they may lose eligibility for financial assistance. Some awards may need to be recalculated based on a federally required formula. If a student withdraws before the semester ends, they should read information on refund policies.
  11. To continue at Adelphi and remain eligible for financial aid, students must meet “satisfactory academic progress.”
