Guide for International Applicants
As an applicant to Adelphi University, you’ll be given careful consideration for admission. This year, we welcomed students from 76 countries who are currently enrolled at Adelphi.
How to Apply to Adelphi as an International Student
You can choose to apply as a standard entry applicant in the following ways:
- First-Year Application – For a student who is attending a university or college for the first time. You must be completing your country’s pre-university education (equivalent to U.S. 12th grade) before arriving for the fall/spring semester.
- Transfer Application – For a student who has attended another university or college, but has not yet completed their degree. Transfer students may have earned credits to be evaluated.
- Graduate Application – For a student who has completed their bachelor’s degree and would like to earn their master’s or doctoral degrees.
We also have an International Accelerator program that offers academic, professional and English language support throughout the beginning of your time at Adelphi.

Required Materials for Applicants
- A completed undergraduate application for admission: We’ll accept either the Adelphi Application or the Common Application – whichever is easier for you!
- Nonrefundable application fee of $50: Applicants who apply online can pay this fee with a credit card or electronic check. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Adelphi University and drawn on a U.S. bank. (International money orders are not accepted.)
- Personal statement or essay: You are encouraged to submit, in 500 words or less, a response to one of the provided questions or a topic of your choice. If preferred, you may submit a report or paper you have written during the current school year.
- Academic records: Undergraduate applicants are required to submit official secondary school/university records directly to Adelphi University. One set of records should be in your native language and one set translated into English. The submission and translation of all required documents and fees are entirely the applicant’s responsibility. Photocopies are not acceptable without an official school stamp or seal. Undergraduate transfer applicants must submit all official transcripts and course descriptions for all institutions of higher education attended.
- SAT/ACT or English proficiency exam (TOEFL, IELTS, or DET) scores:
- If submitting SAT or ACT scores: Scores can be submitted via your official high school transcript, or directly from the appropriate educational testing service. For students intending to enroll in the Learning Resource Program, SAT scores are highly suggested. Students who have obtained a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or who have been out of high school for one year or more will not be required to take the SAT (unless specifically requested).
- If submitting English proficiency exam scores: We require a minimum score of 80 on the TOEFL iBT, 6.5 on the IELTS, and 110 on the web-based Duolingo English Test (DET). If your scores fall below our minimum requirements, you may be considered for one of our pathway programs
- Résumé showing employment, volunteer, or other extracurricular activities (optional)
- Credential (Transcript) Evaluation:
- Course-by-course evaluation: All undergraduate applicants with secondary/high school work completed outside of the United States will be required to send a course-by-course evaluation of their academic work prepared by a NACES member organization. Adelphi recommends you use SpanTran or IEE (discount provided for Adelphi applicants), ECE, or WES, but any NACES member evaluation would be acceptable.
Each of Adelphi’s graduate programs has unique requirements and deadlines for admission.
- For most graduate, advanced certificate, doctoral and postgraduate programs, you can apply via Adelphi’s Graduate Application.
- Official college or university records: All international graduate applicants are required to submit these records to the Adelphi Office of University Admissions.
