An assistive switch is a device designed to help individuals with disabilities interact with electronic devices and perform tasks they might otherwise find challenging. It typically consists of a button, lever, or other mechanism that can be easily activated by the user. These switches are often connected to computers, communication devices, environmental control systems, or assistive technology devices.
The purpose of an assistive switch is to provide individuals with limited mobility or dexterity the means to control and access technology and their environment more independently. For example, someone with limited hand movement might use a switch to operate a computer, turn on lights, or control a wheelchair. Assistive switches can be customized to meet the specific needs and abilities of each user, allowing them to engage more fully in everyday activities and enhance their quality of life.
All switches created at this event will be donated to the NYC Chapter of Makers Making Change lending library. The lending library enables individuals with disabilities access to the assistive devices they need at no cost.
