Clinicians are often challenged with the nature and complexity of grief work with clients as the grief journey will be unending and can also tap into secondary stress for the therapist at times.

Course Description

In this engaging program, participants will acquire essential skills and knowledge to effectively guide individuals through the intricate terrain of grief and bereavement. The program will begin with an overview and understanding of terms and theories related to grief. An array of counseling techniques, including group dynamics and creative arts, to tailor one’s approach and increase perspectives will then be presented. At its conclusion, the training will empower clinicians with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the complexities of grief, offer meaningful support, and contribute to the overall well-being of individuals coping with loss.

The workshop aims to equip social workers with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills to effectively support individuals experiencing grief and bereavement. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of thanatology and the grieving process, learn empathetic communication techniques, and explore therapeutic interventions to facilitate healing.

Participants will leave the workshop with enhanced skills, increased confidence, and a deeper understanding of how to provide practical support to individuals navigating the complex terrain of grief and bereavement.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the grief process, different models of grief, and the various factors that can influence an individual’s experience of loss.
  2. Additionally, attendees will learn and practice therapeutic interventions suitable for grief counseling, both in individual and group settings.
  3. Social workers will be equipped with the skills to navigate cultural differences in grieving practices.
  4.  Finally, the training will focus on identifying and fostering coping mechanisms for both clients and social workers

Faculty Bio

Dr. Katie Kelly LCSW-R, PhD

Dr. Katie Kelly, LCSW-R, Ph.D. is an Adelphi senior adjunct professor of 16 years in the School of Social Work. She began her career working with domestic violence survivors and continued with extensive work and training in grief through a career at hospice. She currently works at Bay Shore High School,on Long Island, where she has been focussed on crisis intervention, counseling and community leadership for the past 13 years.

Unfortunately, we cannot refund cancellations made seven working days or fewer before the event for any reason—or for no-shows. We can provide credit towards a future workshop up to 24 hours before the event. After that, no credit will be issued.
