The Business of Making Music: An Event in Honor of Hispanic Heritage Month

Beginning with a panel of musicians and industry experts that culminates into a performance by the Lulada Club, this event promises to be an afternoon of vibrant music, exciting energy and inspirational stories about the journey of making music.

Vocalist and band leader, Andrea Chavarro will be one of the exciting panelists sharing her musical journey with the audience. We are also excited to have solo artist Linda EPO and saxophonist Jorge Castro joining the panel.

This free event is open to the public and generously sponsored by the Women’s Giving Circle, Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, along with Adelphi University’s College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Music, Chartwells Catering, Latin American and Latinx Studies Program, Robert B. Willumstad School of Business, Diversity, Equality, Inclusion, and Belonging Mentoring Program, and the Hispanic Serving Institution Task Force.

About Lulada Club

Lulada Club is an all-female salsa band doing creative, transformational, and impactful work in the world of salsa music. Every band member is an accomplished musician in their own right. As a collective, this 9-member band is representative of women from across Latin America and the United States working to challenge gendered expectations in salsa, a male-dominated music genre. The Lulada Club is a recognized and sought-after band that has played at venues such as NYC’s Summer Stage, the Lincoln Center and venues throughout New York City.

About the Panelists

Andrea Chavarro

Andrea Chavarro is a Colombian-American vocalist, songwriter, educator and artistic director. Specializing in all-women ensembles, Andrea is dedicated to filling the gender gap in the New York music scene. The now Brooklyn-based artist spent 9 years abroad in Europe, the Middle East and reconnecting with her roots in Cali, Colombia. While she started her professional career in Jazz during a residency in Istanbul, she has most recently been focused on the richness of diasporic Latinx rhythms. Andrea is part of a wide range of projects and is the Director of Lulada Club, NYC’s only all-women salsa band. In 2021 she released her first single “love waves” with her Latinx pop duo project, Dessë Dea, and is also a member of the Caribbean powerhouse band, La Manga.

Linda EPO

Queen’s native Linda EPO’s unique brand of Latin-infused Funk and R&B draws from the NYC melting pot she was born in, and from her Haitian/Mexican roots. She has toured with Grammy-nominated Heritage Blues Orchestra, played at jazz festivals across Mexico as part of the Mexican-roots collective Nixtaband, and has supported soul-rock band On the Sun on tours as backup vocalist and keyboardist. As a solo artist, Linda has brought her eclectic mix of jazz, funk, R&B, Caribbean, and Latin music to stages around the world. Having a reputation of leaving everything on stage when she performs, Linda is honest with her voice and unapologetic with her sound and stage presence. Each note she sings is filled with melancholic passion and natural melodic beauty, every performance is filled with earnest passion and depth. Linda is an Adelphi alumna of the class of 2009.

Jorge Castro

A native of Humacao, Puerto Rico, Jorge Castro studied saxophone and flute at the famed “Escuela Libre de Música”; an institution that boasts distinguished alumnus throughout the musical world. Later moving to Chicago, the saxophonist developed his interest in jazz while studying with Ron Carter, Steve Duke, Joey Sellers and Fareed Haque (among others) at Northern Illinois University. Castro later moves to New York City expanding and growing musically while also studying with world-renowned jazz saxophonist David Sánchez. Jorge is currently working on his debut album.

array of artists and groups including: Josh Groban, Foreigner, Marc Anthony, Latin Jazz All-Stars, Ruben Blades and many many more.
