How do we reduce defensiveness, anxiety, and aggression in a relationship? How do we replace these negative energies with deeper communication, empathy and insight?

This workshop is designed to teach the integration of  verbal and nonverbal methods of expression in an effort to reduce destructive reactivity within relationships and to replace old behavior patterns  with self-awareness, self-regulation and  empathy. We will explore the impact of somatic transference and counter-transference within relationships. These methods can be particularly helpful for online sessions.

Our theory is that the more ways we can interact with our clients, and the more open we are to ourselves, the richer and more satisfying the therapy will be for all.

In this connection the workshop will introduce the use of visualization, breath, sound, creative expression and role playing as part of the treatment process.  Through mind/body techniques  a climate that supports mutual understanding of self and other  is made possible.

These methods are designed to help both therapist and client to melt away defensive stances and move in the direction of genuine connection and mutual understanding.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe three non-verbal interventions for use with couples in on-line treatment sessions.
  2. Identify two interventions that can reduce defensiveness in on-line couple therapy sessions
  3. Distinguish between  each of the following: visualization, creative expressions, and role playing
