The Clothesline Project

The Clothesline Project honors survivors as well as victims of intimate violence. The concept is simple – let each person tell their story in their own unique way, using words and/or artwork to decorate their shirt. Once finished, we would then hang the shirt on the clothesline. This very action serves as an educational tool for those who come to view the Clothesline; it becomes a healing tool for anyone who make a shirt – by hanging the shirt on the line, survivors, friends and family can literally turn their back on some of that pain of their experience and walk away; finally it allows those who are still suffering in silence to understand that they are not alone.

Any person who has experienced such violence, at any time in their life, is encouraged to come forward and design a shirt. Victim’s families and friends are also invited to participate. Adelphi’s Clothesline Project began with a focus on interpersonal violence directed at cisgender women and girls. Over the past 15 years, the project is spearheaded by the Criminal Justice Club and has evolved to recognize the wide range of sex and gender-based violence, including violence aimed at transgender, gender non-binary, and intersex people.

Note: This is an outdoor event 

COVID Policy: All students will be expected to wear masks while visiting the tables and there will be a maximum of 10 people at the tables along the lawn. Students will be allowed to come and go from the table at their leisure. If you are unable to attend in person, feel free to fill out the google form above to submit artwork. Students will be expected to social distance when possible and all materials used will be sanitized in advance and throughout the event.
