Location: Virtual

Members of the Adelphi community are invited to join the Alumni Playwrights Group Spring Fever reading series, a virtual play reading festival featuring 12 brand new works from our company members.

Join us in April and May for 3 weekends of a diverse array of full-length pieces that have been in development over the past year. Our lineup features shows ranging from a reimagined Hansel & Gretel, the rehearsal process of a college production of Virginia Woolf gone awry, a family torn to pieces by a series of slowly uncovered secrets, to an interactive reality science competition featuring alternate endings and voting, AAPG leaves no subject left unexplored.

The weekend of April 30-May 2 will feature:

The Ties That Bind by Colin Murphy, Directed by Andrea Bertola Shaw

Friday, April 30th at 7pm
Out of the closets and onto the stage! The Ties That Bind is a multi-generational story following the lives of a LGBTQ+ community from a pre-Stonewall era to the provocative landscape of Grindr. The past informs the present as these lives intertwine, each fighting to rise, to love, and define “family” in the forefront of raids, homelessness, the AIDS crisis, and the crippling grip of party drugs. Watch a glittering cast of outsiders strut their way through heartbreak and hysterical humor the only way they know how… one day at a time.

Fascists and the People Who Kill Them by Kyle Smith, Directed by Lisa Gaylord

Saturday, May 1st at 7pm
Dunk is satisfied with his life in the Democratic Democracy of Libertaria. He prepares bodies to be dumped in mass graves, has a beautiful government-issued second wife, and two children who love contraband media. When Dunk’s father is killed for treason, Dunk needs to convince his government sentinel, Crom, that his family is just an average law-abiding family. His dysfunctional family has other plans.

Winter Mainstage by Michael DiFrancisco, Directed by Joseph James O’Neil

Saturday, May 1st at 7pm
The cast members of a college production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf meet for an off-campus, off-the-books, boozy rehearsal with their directing professor. When secrets are revealed that could jeopardize the entire production, the students are forced to confront their fears of a rapidly approaching post-graduate life. With drinks flowing and emotions running high, boundaries are crossed as their professor spirals into feelings of inadequacy, loneliness, and obsolescence.

Crumbs by Daniel Ciba, Directed by Camile Arnone

Sunday, May 2nd at 2pm
This reimagining of the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale concerns two sisters as they grapple with their journey into adulthood. Mixed with musings on childhood innocence, personal loss, and the inscrutability of memory, Crumbs considers how the past continually informs the present. But as Hannah and Greta run away, get lost, and meet their witch, can they resist the familiar story— the awkward legacy that casts them as justified murderers—and find their own path forward?

The Adelphi Alumni Playwrights Group was created in June 2020 to serve as a workshop space to reignite creativity and foster the artistic process within the comfort of the Adelphi Alumni community. It is our hope that engaging in active conversations about change will allow us to respond to the now with artistry, responsibility, and empathy.
