The Corrosive Effect of Repeated Experiences of Failure in Children: l- With Learning and Emotional Difficulties ll- On the Autistic Spectrum

Seminars meet via Zoom on April 15 and April 22 from 4:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m.

These two lectures will review the effects of repeated learning and social failures on children’s development and the way they view themselves. Children who are failing in school because of underlying disabilities and/or experience difficulties in relating with their peers, would typically feel not “good enough”. They are prone to respond by withdrawing into themselves or by reacting in counterproductive ways to the frustrations they experience. These predictable reactions have a predictable outcome. They leave them feeling more ineffective and alone and, in many cases, angrier with themselves and others. Recognizing how hopeless and bad many of these children feel is critical in enabling one to tolerate their acts and to develop an alliance with them.

Learning Objectives:

By the completion of this two-session workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Indicate how academic and social failures affect the internal world of children and shape their responses towards others.
2. Utilize interventions that will reach children who are difficult to engage and seem resigned or defiant towards others.
3. Describe how children on the spectrum react to and internalize social failures and learning difficulties.

Ionas Sapountzis, PhD

Dr. Ionas Sapountzis, is the Director of the School Psychology program at the Derner School of Psychology and the Director of the Social Training Center (STC) at Adelphi University. He received his doctoral degree from NYU in 1990 and holds postdoctoral certificates in clinical and school psychology and in child and adolescent psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. He is on faculty at the Adult and Child Postgraduate Psychoanalytic and Psychotherapy Programs at Derner. Dr. Sapountzis has presented at numerous national and international conferences and has several publications on child, adolescent and adult psychotherapy.

Credentialing Information

Participants will receive 1.5 CE credits for each 90 minute seminar class. Adelphi University is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Cancellation Policy

Full refunds are issued for cancellations made up to 7 working days before the event. Cancellations of less than 7 days for any reason, or no-shows are not refunded. Credit towards a future event/workshop are issued for cancellations less than 7 days and up to 24 hours before the event. No credit is issued for cancellations less than 24 hours before the events or no-shows.
