Furthering diversity and inclusion efforts at the University, the Web Development and Digital Strategy (WDDS) have added individual pronouns to the employee directory.
After launching the new website last year and the self-editable My Profile tool in the directory, the WDDS team has been looking at how to further improve and innovate.
Designed by the WDDS team and executed by Postmodern Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), My Profile added the ability for users to include their pronouns internally, however, WDDS wanted to showcase the pronouns to further promote inclusion and show that Adelphi University is an ally of the LGBTQIA+ community.
It’s important to remember that you can’t tell a person’s pronouns by their outward appearance, and some people may not be comfortable voluntarily sharing that information.
Spearheaded by Christine Katz ’10, Adelphi’s User Experience Designer, this initiative comes with guidance from the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Human Resources, University Communications and the Adelphi Pride committee, and builds on the steps the University has taken toward diversity and inclusion, including offering its Diversity Certificate Program to Long Island schools and organizations and expanding the expertise and diversity of its Board of Trustees.
Remember, it’s easy to be involved in this movement of diversity and inclusion. The next time you’re in a meeting, try introducing yourself with your pronouns. You never realize how a small gesture could make a huge impact on those you know.
