Graphic Design for Children’s and Young Adult Publishing
Designing for children’s and young adult’s publishing is an exciting, growing and uniquely creative field.
Learn how to succeed in this specialized field of design with a special focus on books, magazines and digital publishing. Through an exploration of crisp, bright, bold graphics and typography, students will develop the skills necessary to create content that is attractive to a younger audience—and their parents.
Can be taken individually or as part of the Real-world Graphic Design Skills certificate program.

Prerequisites
Basic interest in or knowledge of graphic design and typography. General working knowledge of computers. Basic knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
Instructor
Ryan Flanders
Ryan Flanders is the former Design Director of iconic humor publication MAD Magazine, and is currently the Art Director of the magazines Scholastic News 2 and Storyworks 2 at Scholastic. His two decades as a professional designer includes print and digital freelance work for clients such as Warner Bros., Old Westbury Gardens, The John Lennon Real Love Project and the popular satirical website The Hard Times. Ryan has received the Award of Excellence from Communication Arts and the Silver Medal for Art Direction from the Society of Illustrators, and has been a member of the judging and nomination committees for the National Cartoonist Society’s Graphic Novel Awards and New York Comic Con’s Harvey Awards. He has lectured as a guest speaker at the High School of Art & Design in Manhattan and at Adelphi University, where he is an Adjunct Professor with AU’s “For the Love of Art” high school education initiative. Ryan is a graduate of Adelphi’s Graphic Design program, and his work can be seen at rflanders.com.
