This workshop provides you with an overview of palliative care.

Offered exclusively to registered nurses (RNs and APRNs), participants will earn six Continuing Education Units through Adelphi University’s College of Nursing and Public Health, an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Northeast Multistate Division, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.  You will also be awarded a digital badge that you can add to your résumé or social media.

You will learn the history and philosophy of such care, as well as its various models and core concepts. You will also explore the role of the nurse as a member of the interdisciplinary palliative care team.

Can be taken individually or as part of the Healthcare: Palliative Care certificate program.

Meeting Time

Each workshop will require approximately six hours of work across two weeks, which must be completed before the end date of the workshop. You and your instructors and classmates will interact asynchronously — so there are no required class meetings on specific days and times.

Instructors

Ellen Stilwell, RN, CHPN

Ellen Long Stilwell is a registered nurse certified in hospice and palliative care. While raising her two boys, she volunteered as part of the hospice team with Metropolitan Jewish Health System. She worked several years for Visiting Nurse Service of New York, where she cared for hospice patients and families in their homes. She has worked with Calvary as a Liaison at Weill Cornell, transitioning patients and families from the acute care setting into hospice care. Ellen is working again with patients and families at home, the heart of hospice with Calvary. She is trained as a death doula by a Buddhist Monk. Ellen is the author of the book Love Death Love, Embracing the Journey to Death.  A debut volume of true stories that explore the myriad facets of loss and grief in a beautiful continuously instructional manner.

Maria Christine Santos, MS, RN, ANP-BC, ACHPN, CCRN-CSC

Maria Christine Santos is a board certified Adult Primary Care and Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner. She is a graduate of New York University with a Bachelors in Nursing and Masters specializing in Primary Care and Palliative Care. Christine holds additional board certifications in Hospice and Palliative Nursing and Critical Care Nursing. Through her many years of acute care experience in Intensive Care Units, PACU and Cardiac Surgery, she witnessed life, death, and near-death experiences meshed with high tech medical interventions. Christine now focuses on providing cutting edge palliation and support to patients with advanced illness. Christine serves as  adjunct clinical faculty at New York University’s College of Nursing, where she teaches undergraduate students and precepts palliative care nurse practitioner students.
