Breaking the Wound-To-Violence Cycle: The Healing Power of Restorative Relationships

The path to committing violent and destructive acts to oneself and others often begins with traumatic wounds that trigger shame and humiliation.

Dr. Jessie Klein, author of The Bully Society, brings her keen insights to highlight some of the institutional and social influences that perpetuate and/or aggravate the wound- to-violence cycles, for example, harsh verbal family discipline; systemic school bullying; oppressive race, class, and gender expectations; commodified and aggressive social media relationships; and a wider culture of normalized violence, including unchecked and routinized microaggressions.

This conference enables attendees to recognize, and begin to reverse, the conditions associated with isolation, depression, anxiety, and hostility in the lives of the children, adolescents and adults with whom we work.

Dr. Klein will discuss and demonstrate practical, relevant, high-impact prevention and intervention practices that enable schools and other institutions to be compassionate communities. In schools that are trauma-sensitive empathic communication among students and between students and faculty serves to restore and solidify relationships that foster emotional and academic growth.

Objectives:

1. Participants will understand that traumatic wounds that trigger shame and humiliation can potentially lead to committing violent and destructive acts to oneself and others.
2. Participants will identify institutional and social influences that perpetuate and/or aggravate the wound- to-violence cycles.
3. Participants will identify the components of restorative relationships that can potentially break wound- to-violence cycles.
4. Participant will gain tools to develop trauma-sensitive cultures that foster healthy relationships with self and others, as well as emotional and academic growth.

Jessie Klein, Ph.D., MSW, M.Ed.
Associate Professor of sociology/criminal justice

Jessie Klein, Ph.D., MSW, M.Ed. is an Adelphi University Associate Professor of sociology/criminal justice. She is the author of Bullying: A Reference Handbook (ABC-CLIO 2019); and The Bully Society: School shootings and the crisis of bullying in America’s schools (NYU Press 2012). She also founded and directs Creating Compassionate Communities, a K-12 empathy-building school bullying prevention/intervention program. Previously she served as a high school Acting Assistant Principal of Guidance, school social worker, college adviser, social studies teacher, substance abuse prevention counselor, and conflict resolution coordinator. She has also worked as a social work professor.

Full refunds are issued for cancellations made up to 7 working days before the event. Cancellations of less than 7 days for any reason, or no-shows are not refunded. Credit towards a future event/workshop are issued for cancellations less than 7 days and up to 24 hours before the event. No credit is issued for cancellations less than 24 hours before the events or no-shows.
