Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation Trauma

This seminar examines the long-term effects of childhood abuse, neglect and exploitation on adaptation, personality formation and psychopathology. The seminar reviews the traumatogenic factors of these experiences from the perspective of acute, chronic, and complex trauma. It emphasizes therapeutic considerations for effective treatment and healing.

About Our Faculty

Mary Gail Frawley-O’Dea, PhD

For over thirty years, Dr. Frawley-O’Dea has specialized in treating adolescent and adult male and female survivors of sexual abuse and is internationally known for this work. Her co-authored book, Treating the Adult Survivor of Childhood Sexual Abuse, is considered a classic. Another book, Perversion of Power: Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church, examined the underpinnings of the Church’s abuse scandal and a third book, The Supervisory Relationship, presents a relational psychodynamic model of supervision. Mary Gail appeared in the Oscar-nominated documentary film, Deliver Us From Evil, also chronicling Catholic scandal. A doctoral and post-doctoral graduate of Derner, Mary Gail taught and supervised in both the doctoral and post-doctoral programs before becoming Co-Director of Manhattan Institute of Psychoanalysis and Director of their Trauma Treatment Program. Now living in Charlotte, NC, Mary Gail is Executive Director of Presbyterian Psychological Services, a non-profit, trauma-informed mental health center. She is the author of numerous book chapters and professional articles addressing trauma.

Warren Spielberg, PhD

Dr. Warren Spielberg, Fulbright Scholar, psychologist, psychoanalyst is an Associate Teaching Professor at the Schools of Public Engagement. In addition, he is visiting teaching fellow at the Child Institute at Al Quds University on the West Bank and a visiting faculty member at the William Alanson White Institute CATP. He is Co-Editor of “The Psychology of Black Boys and Adolescents- Two Volumes”. He is an acknowledged authority on the problems of boys and men and is a member of the American Psychological (APA) Task Force on treatment guidelines for boys and men. He is the recipient of the Practitioner of the Year Citation by the APA for his work with the FDNY post 9/11. His consultative work has included UNICEF, Peace Now, UFT and most recently the NYC Mayor’s Young Men’s Initiative. He maintains a private practice in Brooklyn Heights, where he works with children, families and adults.

Cancellation Policy

Full refunds are issued for cancellations made up to 7 working days before the event. Cancellations of less than 7 days for any reason, or no-shows are not refunded. Credit towards a future event/workshop are issued for cancellations less than 7 days and up to 24 hours before the event. No credit is issued for cancellations less than 24 hours before the events or no-shows.
