Potential Avenues for Healing Strategies with Poor Youth of Color in Response to the Dual Pandemics of Covid-19 and Structural Racism

Seminars meet via Zoom.

This workshop session is designed to broaden the therapeutic view and enhance the skills of clinicians treating impoverished children of Color. The workshop will promote relevant knowledge of racial, cultural, and economic stressors on families that they serve. Attention will be given to factors that negatively impact the treatment. We will discuss culturally, racially, and socially competent strategies that help to restore previously depleted individual and familial functioning. Ways to strengthen the treatment alliance with the patient will be addressed as well.

Learning Objectives:

By the completion of this one-session workshop participants will be able to:

1. Recognize which social and cognitive skills are most adaptive under adverse and impoverished conditions.
2. Describe two ways of enhancing a collaborative alliance with parents that therapeutically informs the individual treatment.

Kirkland C. Vaughans, PhD

Dr. Kirkland C. Vaughans, is a Fellow, training and supervising analyst, of the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR), Adjunct Clinical Professor at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, Clinical Director of the Derner/Hempstead Child Clinic and Senior Adjunct Professor and faculty at the Postgraduate Programs in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy at Adelphi University. He is a founding member of Black Psychoanalysts Speak and serves on the boards of the Holmes Commission of the American Psychoanalytic Association, the International Psychotherapy Institute and the Harlem Family Institute and was the former Regional Director of the New Hope Guild Centers for Children’s Mental Health of Brooklyn. He is the founding Editor of the Journal of Infant, Child, and Adolescent Psychotherapy and co-edited the volumes, The Psychology of Black Boys and Adolescents and has published articles on generational trauma and the school to prison pipeline. In addition, he has presented at over 130 conferences and panels and maintains a private practice in New York City.

Nicole Daisy-Etienne, PhD

Dr. Nicole Daisy is a clinical psychologist, founder of On Course Psychological Counseling, P.C.. She is an Adjunct Profession at the Derner Institute for Advanced Psychological Services and Director of the Derner Hempstead Child Clinic.

Credentialing Information

Participants will receive 1.5 CE credits for each 90 minute seminar class. Adelphi University is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Full refunds are issued for cancellations made up to 7 working days before the event. Cancellations of less than 7 days for any reason, or no-shows are not refunded. Credit towards a future event/workshop are issued for cancellations less than 7 days and up to 24 hours before the event. No credit is issued for cancellations less than 24 hours before the events or no-shows.
