The Dinner and Dialogue Series allows for informal conversations between university students and faculty, staff, or administrators of color over dinner. The purpose of the dinner is to provide an opportunity for students to hear from faculty, staff, and administrators of color about their life experiences, careers, successes and challenges in an intimate setting. All university students are welcome to attend the Dinner and Dialogue series.
Sandra Castro was born in El Salvador and grew up on Long Island. She is a part-time faculty member of the Sociology Department and teaches courses on Sociology of Violence, Sociology of the Family and a First Year Seminar on the experience of Second Generation Immigrants in NY. She is also the Faculty Coordinator for the Social Science Bachelor’s Degree in the College of Professional and Continuing Studies (CPCS) at Adelphi.
Sandra is also a doctoral candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center in the Social Welfare program. She holds a Masters of Philosophy degree in Social Welfare, a Master of Science in Rural Development and a Master of Arts in Sustainable Development. Her dissertation, “Tears, Trauma and Transformation: Central American Mothers’ Experiences of Violence, Migration and Family Reunification,” focuses on the reunification experience of Central American mothers with their children after years of separation. She was awarded the 2020-2021 American Association of University Women (AAUW) Dissertation Fellowship Grant to complete her dissertation.
Sandra began her professional career as a community organizer working with Mayan tseltal indigenous women in Chiapas, Mexico from 1999-2008. Since returning to New York, she has been active in supporting various immigrant’s rights and social justice organizations in NY from 2009 to the present. She was a member of NY’s first latina and female led worker-owned cooperative, Caracol Language Coop, where she provided professional Spanish/English interpretation and translation services for various community and labor groups. In addition to her teaching at Adelphi, she is also the faculty advisor for Adelphi’s Latino Student Association (LSA). In 2017, she was elected to be the Adjunct representative on the AAUP faculty union at Adelphi. In 2019, she received the Adelphi Teaching Excellence Award for Part-Time faculty. She is the co-founder and active member of the Adjunct Steering Committee (ASC), which advocates for better labor conditions for contingent faculty at Adelphi.
