SGA Speaker Series: What They Didn’t Teach You in History Class: America’s Hidden True Black History

Fred Saffold , Director of the True Black History Museum will take the audience on a journey through the African-American experience utilizing several artifacts from their collection: describing to the audience what they are looking at and reading, and why these artifacts have historic significance that impacts us all today. The goal is to have the audience  know that Black people have an existence that pre-dates slavery and that existence is based in royalty and accomplishment.  The speaker will examine American racism , and explore possible solutions to America’s race problems.  The Museum was established to preserve the history of African-American people and to educate others of the many great contributions that African-Americans have made to humanity. 

Fred Saffold is a widely sought after presenter, speaking regularly on college campuses nationwide on issues of black history and racial justice. As a retired law enforcement professional and current Director of the acclaimed traveling True Black history Museum, Fred pulls from his unique background and years of activism and racial justice advocacy as the source of a pivotal understanding of the depth of racial justice work. This interactive virtual workshop takes attendees on a difficult but necessary journey, utilizing historic artifacts, documents and photographs, bridging connections from the past to the 21st century. The workshop examines how these artifacts and images shaped racial attitudes and worldviews that still exist today. In exploring solutions for racial equity and inclusion, Fred’s engaging presentation style motivates participants and brings about transformation. Fred’s work makes absolutely clear the impact that racism has on us all, and challenges participants to take action to make a more inclusive and equitable America.
