The first place winner has held numerous leadership positions since coming to Adelphi; Event Co-Chair for Relay for Life, Parliamentarian of SGA, Vice President of C.A.L.I.B.E.R., FCAP Leader, in addition to being a member and contributor to many other organizations on campus.
As a result of her outstanding participation and achievements has received many honors and awards including being inducted into ODK, the National Leadership Honor Society, Sigma Lamba Leadership Honor Society, Psi Chi International Honor Society in Psychology and has been on the Dean’s list since a freshman.
One recommender wrote, “she is an exemplary young lady who exudes scholastic achievement, relentless involvement, and a commitment to her community and goals. She is a role model and lasting example to her peers, our Admissions unit, and all the constituents she has worked with throughout her community service and engagement initiatives. She is a gem who will continue to grow.”

The second place winner is currently President of the Class of 2015, Vice President of the National Leadership Honor Society ODK, Founding President of Pi Epsilon Environmental Studies Honor Society, in addition to holding other leadership roles as Vice President of Circle K International and President of the Green Council. She has participated in numerous community service endeavors such as Adelphi Gives Back, Alternative Winter Break, Relay for Life, and Alternative Spring Break in Israel, and in addition has worked on campus since 2012 as a senior Writing Center tutor, held internships working for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Estee Lauder, Clean Water Action, and the Citizens Campaign for the Environment; all while maintaining a high GPA.
One recommender wrote, “She possesses a brilliant mind, a clear capacity to lead, and passion for issues critical to our society and planet. She has had a significant positive impact on our campus through her intelligence, talents and dedication to the community. Not only is she motivated to work towards progressive change, she is also skilled at doing so.”

Christa Ciuffo
The third place winner has been very active in community service since coming to Adelphi. She began her undergraduate career at Adelphi by participating in the Freshman Community Action Program and since that time she has led and participated in countless community service endeavors, currently holding a position as President of C.A.L.I.B.E.R. She has worked on campus since freshman year, has been an active member in the residential life community as a Resident Assistant, and has held numerous other leadership positions such as Peer Assistant Leader, Orientation Leader, EXCEL Mentor, Hall council Advisor and Peer Mentor, all while holding a high GPA in the highly demanding Nursing program.
One recommender stated, “Her service work has been astonishing, leading initiatives with such organizations as Habitat for Humanity and projects such as post-Sandy relief. She is an inspiration and model who follows through with passion, continuous commitment and insistence on maintaining high standards in all that she does. She is a conscientious, committed, independent-minded and proactive student whose values appear to be very much in line with the University in terms of civic engagement, service to others and leadership.”
Parent Recognition Awards
Kathleen Hesse, Mother
Alyssa Hesse ‘15
Alyssa Hesse describes in the first line of her nominating essay, “My mother is the most admirable person I know.” According to Alyssa, her mother, Kathleen, stopped her own work as a director and teacher in a successful local preschool to dedicate her time and efforts to the well being and success of both Alyssa’s benefit and her brother who was chronically ill. Kathleen championed his efforts not only in high school for his right to an education and an Advanced Regents Diploma, but continued her efforts when he transferred to Adelphi University from Nassau Community College. Alyssa indicated that his illness prohibits his driving due to seizures and other neurological issues, so she wrote, that her mother “drives him to all his classes, clinical observations and volunteer hours, waiting in the car until he finished in case any medical issues came about.” Alyssa is proud to write that “not only does she have one child walking in graduation this spring, but two” and that her brother is graduating with a high GPA and acceptance into both graduate schools to which he had applied.
In closing, Alyssa writes, “I can only hope I put into words how amazing she is and her impact on both of us. While I will be pursuing a business career upon graduation, my brother and mom will both be back in the fall as my brother will be attending Adelphi again in pursuit of a Master’s in speech language pathology. Neither of us would be where we are today without her.”
