“I created a scholarship in memory of my late husband. I am deeply grateful each year for the opportunity to meet the John A. Weisz scholarship recipients; clearly, they remind me of the promise of Adelphi.”
John A. Weisz Scholarship
Barbara Weisz ’66 is a graduate of Adelphi, having earned her degree in history from the College of Arts and Sciences. Prior to working as a social studies teacher at Saint Vincent Ferrer High School, Mrs. Weisz served as a vice president at Citibank Private Bank. She has also provided her time, talent and expertise to her alma mater as a member of the University’s Board of Trustees.
In 2005, Mrs. Weisz established the John A. Weisz Scholarship to honor her husband’s memory and to provide financial support to students in need, from all walks of life, and pursuing degrees in any field of study. Such was the man John Weisz; he valued everyone.
A visionary, Mr. Weisz, with only a secretary, established a firm that grew to over 300 employees in 20 locations in the United States. It went on to be acquired by an internationally known company. While quite unusual in such transactions, Mr. Weisz made sure his firm was acquired in total—no employee lost his or her job. Those who knew Mr. Weisz described him as loyal and generous; a wonderful husband, a beloved father, a great friend and a valued mentor. A quote from one of the many letters Barbara received reflects how highly John was regarded, “John had vast knowledge of the financial markets. He was truly a class act and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.”
The students who receive this scholarship are known as “Weisz Scholars” during their years at Adelphi and, after graduating, they carry on his legacy in whatever occupation they choose.
