Gregory Haggerty, M.A. ’03, Ph.D. ’08

Gregory Haggerty, M.A. ’03, Ph.D. ’08, the assistant director of residency training at Nassau University Medical Center, considers his time at Derner “a pivotal experience in [his] life,” as he entered the program not entirely sure of what path he wanted to pursue. Initially drawn to Adelphi because of the available evening courses, which allowed him to retain his full-time job, Dr. Haggerty formed connections that would prove critical in career.

Dr. Haggerty especially benefited from the tutelage of Professor Joel Weinberger, Ph.D. whom he lauds for “often taking many master’s students into his research lab where they gain research experiences and mentorship that demystifies research and makes in more personal and interesting.”

Today, Dr. Haggerty considers Dr. Weinberger a colleague. The two have co-authored a book chapter and have published a peer-reviewed journal article based on Dr. Haggerty’s master’s thesis.

Dr. Haggerty is also collaborating on research with Professor Robert Bornstein, Ph.D. The duo recently won a two-year, $320,000 grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to evaluate tests of narcissism and dependency with a proposal that Dr. Bornstein refers to as “transformative.”

“My experience in the Derner master’s program was so influential that without it I can honestly say I would not be where I am today,” Mr. Haggerty said.
