Faculty Spotlight - Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures

This year, Dr. Nicolas Carbo taught courses in Advanced Conversation Through Film, Trends and Tendencies in Hispanic America, Intro to Hispanic Lit., Advanced Grammar and Composition, and a Survey of Hispanic-American Lit.

Dr. Jonathan Hiller published the article “The Negation of God Erected into a System of Disaster Relief: The British Press and the Great Neapolitan Earthquake of 1857” in Forum Italicum and a book chapter on scientist Cesare Lombroso’s influence on literature and opera in Routledge’s The Cesare Lombroso Handbook. He also presented research on novelist Alfredo Oriani at the AATI Annual Conference in Strasbourg, France, and will present a paper on Franchetti’s 1892 opera Cristoforo Colombo at the 2014 MLA Annual Convention in Chicago.

Dr. Nicole Rudolph presented a paper on technology and nature in the French home at the Society for French Historical Studies in Cambridge, MA in April and took over as Director of the International Studies program in September. She has signed a contract to publish her book, At Home in Postwar France, with Berghahn Books (Oxford / New York). She will be speaking about the Grenelle de l’environnement in Aberdeen, Scotland next July.

Dr. Priya Wadhera has signed a book contract with Rodopi to publish Original Copies: The Postmodern Aesthetic of Georges Perec and Andy Warhol as part of Rodopi’s Faux Titre series. It is scheduled to appear in 2014. Her article on food in Perec “‘Privés de repas du soir’: Meals and memories in Georges Perec’s W ou le souvenir d’enfance” is presently under review by French Forum, a journal of the University of Pennsylvania.

Last fall, she published the article «Fêter la copie, brouiller l’original: Une étude de l’esthétique postmoderne dans Un cabinet d’amateur de Perec et d’oeuvres choisies de Warhol» in Modern Language Notes and a book review on “L’éternel et l’éphémère” by Christelle Reggiani which appeared in Columbia University’s Romanic Review.

Dr. Raysa Amador, in addition to her myriad duties as chair and tireless champion of the study of languages on campus, completed the manuscript of an intermediate Spanish language textbook entitled Lengua y vida (co-authored with Maria Dominicis) which will be sent to editorial houses for review. She also participated in the 2013 ADFL Summer Seminar in Pittsburgh, PA, hosted by the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University.

Dr. Rakhel Villamil-Acera completed a book chapter entitled “Pedro Muñoz Seca (1881-1936): The Comic Effect of the Grotesque” which will appear in Palgrave Macmillan’s Spanish and Portuguese Across Time, Space, and Borders. She has published “Sociolectos y antilenguajes en el teatro cómico de preguerra” in the journal Critica Hispánica. Her article “¡Qué divertido es divorciarse!: la desentimentalización del divorcio en el teatro madrileño antes y después de la Segunda República” is in press in the journal Hispania.. The manuscript for her book project entitled “La construcción del diálogo teatral en el teatro cómico español (1898-1936): el discurso humorístico en el context social” has been submitted for review.

Together, the faculty of the DLLC have been working on the following programs throughout the year: The Certificate in Translation Studies, which has been approved and has begun accepting students; the Italian Concentration for International Studies; and finally, revisions to courses for approval within Adelphi’s new General Education program.

All of this work would not be possible without Ms. Kathy Kannengeiser, our dedicated administrative assistant, our adjunct faculty, and so many outstanding students who make the department a stimulating place to learn, conduct research, and communicate.
