Kyra McFarland, Theatre Major

Since I’m a theatre major, what I’ve enjoyed most about going into the city is the accessibility of theatre and the performing arts. I think a giant chunk of my learning comes from seeing what my professors are teaching happen in the flesh on stage. Over the past two years, I’ve seen more than 40 productions— plays and musicals, on-Broadway and off-Broadway, as well as musical performances at Carnegie Hall and other venues. Being so close to New York City has also made it so much easier to get a head start on my career of choice—acting. One example of that is the internship I’ve had all summer off-Broadway at the Ensemble Studio Theatre. If I had stayed in Wisconsin, there is no way I would feel like I was part of the theatre world in any sense. By being so close to Manhattan, I feel that while I’m still in school and learning from professors who themselves are professionals. I’m getting a head start on becoming a professional and how to handle myself in the professional world.

The reason I came to Adelphi is because of the theatre department. It is such a welcoming group of professors and students; it was pretty hard to pass up. I also chose Adelphi because of the Honors College and the rather homey feeling that department has as well. I am very much someone who prefers to have one-on-one conversations with my professors, and with classes with no more than 20 to 25 people, that is easily attainable.

Adelphi professors take care to learn their students’ names and really who they are, such as their majors or just their personalities. I learned that when I first came to the campus, and it was something that really stuck with me as I was going through the college decision process. As I said before, proximity to New York City was a huge deciding factor. The location of Adelphi is just perfect. Garden City lives up to its name as being a beautiful community, but it also has a lot of entertainment to offer, such as Roosevelt Field Mall and the local shops and restaurants.

However, my favorite aspect about Adelphi’s location is that it is a certified arboretum. Even after [Superstorm Sandy], there are trees blooming all over campus that have students sprawled under them and around them any time the sun is shining…even in winter. And, I will admit, some of the art that lives on campus is interesting to say the least. While New York City called me to come east to study, Adelphi is really what has made it my home.nals.
