Barbara Sawitsky is the Director of Patents & Licensing & Business Development for The New York Blood Center and the Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute (LFKRI). NYBC is the second largest private blood bank in the US serving the needs of over 20 million people in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut metro area. LFKRI is a world leader in transfusion medicine research and has licensed patents ranging from a breakthrough process to inactivate HIV and other lipid enveloped viruses in plasma to a marketed therapeutic for HIV and molecular genotyping of red cells. NYBC’s National Cord Blood Center is the largest public cord blood bank and has provided over 20% of all cord blood stem cell units for bone marrow transplantation to patients worldwide.
Prior to joining NYBC, Barbara was Director of Business Development at OSI Pharmaceuticals. She has over 30 years of experience in the biotech and pharmaceutical industry having worked for Wyeth and Technicon (Bayer) and was CEO of Dynal Inc and The Alpha Tauri Group ltd. Barbara’s academic sector experience includes Director of the Office of Technology Management and Licensing at the City University of New York and Deputy Director of the Office of Technology Licensing & Industry Relations at SUNY-Stony Brook. She has published several research papers on the characteristics of CLL lymphocytes. Barbara routinely speaks on technology management and drug development at industry meetings. She is Co-Chair of the NYC Chapter of the Licensing Executives Society.
Barbara has a B.A .Biology (cum laude) and an M.B.A. in Management from Adelphi University and is a Certified Licensing Professional (CLP).
