Many at Adelphi have lost access to personal or family computers
Adelphi’s Office of Information Technology, in partnership with the Center for Student Involvement, would like to assist students who were adversely affected by the recent storms. Many of our current student body have lost their personal or family computers or are unable to use them due to housing displacement. We are implementing a special laptop loan program to aid Adelphi students with technology resources needed for their academic success.
If you have experienced the loss of your computer or home due to the recent storm, you can request a laptop for extended loan by completing the form at it.adelphi.edu/resources/loan/. In the “Special needs or preferences” text box at the bottom of the form, please indicate that this is an extended loan request and the reason given for the extension. You will be notified when the request has been approved and the unit is ready for pickup at the Help Desk in Swirbul Library. With this extended laptop loan program, students directly affected by Hurricane Sandy have until the end of the semester to return these units.
What can you expect with this computer loan? Our loaner laptops are approximately three years old and run on the Microsoft Windows XP platform. Microsoft Office 2010 is included, giving you the ability to do word processing, presentations, and spreadsheets. Only PCs are available for loan at this time. The computer is equipped with wireless and hardwired capabilities.
Wireless Internet access is provided on Adelphi campuses, however access outside of campus will be the user’s responsibility. Subscribers of Cablevision and Time Warner might be able to access the internet with numerous hot spots of their company’s coverage area. Other options such as cell phone tethering and “makeshift” hot spots are alternatives.
IT advises you to beware of information loss and identity theft. False “FEMA” websites have been reported, so be mindful when giving out your ID and other personal information. Remember to save your work frequently to a USB drive or cloud storage location to prevent data loss.
In addition, the Swirbul Library 100 and 101 computer labs are available for student access and use until 3:00 a.m. Adelphi ID is required. The rooms may be accessed with your ID card from the adjoining parking lot, which is monitored through the evening by Public Safety.
We wish you well and we are here to help.
