Our region has taken a terrible blow and the impact of the storm continues to take its toll as families return to their homes to survey the damage and begin the very difficult process of rebuilding their lives. This will take weeks, if not months.
However, Adelphi worked throughout the storm to ensure that our facilities and centers were prepared to reopen on Monday, November 5. We have taken extraordinary measures to position our internal transportation resources at all major public transportation hubs on Long Island in proximity to our campus, modified our academic calendar to ensure that it is the least disruptive to students while meeting state requirements, and asked our faculty to be flexible and adaptive in their expectations of students.
While we were closed, we know that our students, faculty and staff have given hundreds of hours of service at emergency shelters and through regional, grassroots efforts in their communities. The blood and relief drives on campus were a tremendous success. Read more and see the photos here. Adelphi describes itself as the engaged university — a message brought to life by the acts of selfless kindness and compassion demonstrated in response to this disaster.
It is now time for us to show the same fortitude as we restart this semester. Carpooling and public transportation are the best measures we have at our disposal at this time. Please click here for car pool/ride share information and for links to information on subway, bus, and commuter rail information including the LIRR. We anticipate the gas issue to slowly subside this week as more resources are brought into the region and more and more stations regain power.
If students have an extraordinary circumstance, they should reach out to their advisor, professors, or Jeffrey Kessler, our Dean of Students at Kessler@adelphi.edu or by phone at 516.877.3660. Please be assured that we will do our very best to meet the needs of our students.
