One Water Makes New York Debut at Adelphi—Why This Natural Resource is Shrinking and What We Can Do to Stop It

Adelphi University would like to invite Adelphi students, staff, faculty, and all community members to participate in a dialogue about the increasing scarcity of fresh, useable water on our planet and ways that we can protect this natural resource to safeguard our future on Wednesday, April 18, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (AUPAC).

The evening will feature a panel discussion and the first screening of One Water in New York—a 50-minute documentary narrated by Martin Sheen which uses visual stories to educate a global audience about humans’ changing relationship with water—followed by a question and answer session with the principle filmmakers. This event is sponsored by the Adelphi’s College of Arts and Sciences, Environmental Studies Program, the Communications Department, and the Environmental Action Coalition. The event is free and open to the public.

One Water seeks to bring our attention to the global water crisis using visual footage and interviews from across 14 countries over a span of five years. The film will debut at 6:00 p.m. in the AUPAC Concert Hall on a brand new 30 foot wide screen using a state-of-the-art 16,000 lumen HD projector from Digital Projection. The screening will be followed by a question and answer session with the principle filmmakers including Producer, Writer, and Director of the film Sanjeev Chatterjee; and Dean of Adelphi’s College of Arts and Sciences Sam Grogg who served as the film’s executive producer. In this role, Dean Grogg expanded the film from its original 20-minute version, arranged for Martin Sheen to narrate the television version, and negotiated airing time for the documentary on the Discovery Network.  

A panel discussion about global and local water issues will be held in the AUPAC Black Box Theatre prior to the screening from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Panelists include Dean of Adelphi’s College of Arts and Sciences and the film’s Executive Producer Sam Grogg; Producer, Writer, and Director of the film Sanjeev Chatterjee; Assistant Professor and Chair of the Department of Allied Health in Adelphi’s School of Nursing Kenneth Rondello to speak on emergency management; and COO of PW Grosser Consulting Inc. Frank Castellano. There will also be a reception with the panelists and local environmental groups in the AUPAC Lobby from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

This will be the first time the documentary has been shown in a theater outside of Miami where it was produced through the Knight Center for International Media at the University of Miami School of Communication. The film also appeared on the Discovery Channel. One Water’s feature-length version has been shown at several festivals and has received a number of international awards, including Best Documentary at the 2009 Columbus International Film and Video Festival, and Best Film on Sustainable Development at Cinemambiente 2008 in Turin, Italy.
