A Building Force on Long Island and Beyond

If you see Arthur Herman on a golf course in the middle of the week, in the middle of the day, you had better believe he’s earned it.

Mr. Herman founded the A.D. Herman Construction Company in 1958 and charted its successful course for over 30 years. Between 1958 and 1988, Mr. Herman’s company built hospitals, manufacturing plants, banks, apartment buildings, educational facilities, hotels, and corporate headquarters throughout New York City and Long Island. Mr. Herman’s contributions to Adelphi’s campus include the Ruth S. Harley University Center and the 1982 expansion of Swirbul Library.

You can scarcely drive by a college campus on Long Island without seeing a building that A.D. Herman has constructed or refurbished. From Adelphi in Garden City to Stony Brook University, Arthur Herman has left an indelible footprint on college campuses across the Island in addition to countless business and industrial parks.

Before Arthur Herman attended Adelphi, he gained a world of experience in the U.S. Navy, spent time on the USS Littlerock and was honorably discharged after 19 months. After the Navy, he pursued a degree in business administration and played on Adelphi’s baseball, track, and basketball teams. Adelphi taught Mr. Herman to “think on the field.” His courses in drafting and mathematics truly helped him in his chosen career.

After selling his business in 1988, Mr. Herman continued as an advisor to the company’s new owner. During his long ownership of the A.D. Herman Construction Company, he made some building investments of his own. Semi-retired, he now manages these properties throughout Long Island, New York, and New Jersey. He has served as the president of the Building Trades Employers Association of Long Island, Long Island Building Congress, General Building Contractors of N.Y. State, Associated General Contractors of America, and The Real Estate Board of N.Y.C. He presently serves as a director on the Stony Brook Foundation of Stony Brook University, and on the Corporate Advisory Board of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Entrepreneur, builder, investor, and risk taker: Arthur Herman defies a single title.
