Empowering Environmentalism: A Sustainable Approach to Environmental Action

Many individuals and organizations want to be more environmentally-friendly, but it’s difficult to know what to do: which recommendations to follow, which research is accurate, and how much our actions can really make a difference. Unfortunately, this uncertainty can leave us feeling overwhelmed and discouraged, leading us to abandon environmental discourse altogether.

In this talk, Melissa Boo ’10 will introduce a new approach to sustainability – empowering environmentalism – which provides the clarity, motivation, and endurance to make necessary conversations and collaborations happen. Drawing from her decade of experience in sustainability projects both across the country and around the world, Melissa will share how we can each find impactful and important ways to contribute to the collective creation of a more equitable and sustainable world.

Speaker Bio

Melissa is an empowering environmental educator and consultant based in New York City. She has spent the last decade bringing sustainable solutions to life in both the private and nonprofit sectors, leading her to collaborate with communities across the country and around the world. Her project experiences include organic farming, distributed solar and wind power, regenerative ecological design, and eco-friendly retail development. She has taught with numerous environmental education organizations, including the NYU Wallerstein Collaborative for Urban Environmental Studies and Sustainability, the Wildlife Conservation Society, and nature centers across NYC and Long Island. She earned her MS in Sustainability Management from Columbia University in 2013 and a BA with Departmental Honors in Environmental Studies from Adelphi University in 2010. She is currently an adjunct professor of environmental studies at the School of Visual Arts.
