This 5-part Leadership Workshop Series looks to provide school leaders with the knowledge, skills and understanding to better implement a school re-opening plan that incorporates social-emotional learning supports for all members for the community.

This workshop series looks to build upon the socio-emotional learning frameworks schools in NYC have embraced.

School leaders will have an opportunity to examine personal leadership qualities and styles that are most effective and important for coordinating social-emotional learning (SEL) programs and initiatives in their schools in order to facilitate positive school climate and culture.

After completing this series, school leaders will have the knowledge, skills and understanding to better implement a school re-opening plan that incorporates social-emotional learning supports for all members for the community. In these workshops participants will be exposed to the current educational and neuroscientific research on the critical ways emotions affect behavior and success.  

CTLE Credits: 10 total, 2 per workshop

Cost: $50 per workshop with a 50% discount for alumni

Leading with Emotional Intelligence and Well-being

  • Understanding Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Development
  • Identifying styles, strengths, and effects on teaching and learning
  • Engage in a self-assessment in order to understand EI (human-centered leadership)
  • Gain awareness of strengths and opportunities for growth
  • Strategies for self-care, self-renewal for effective leadership during a crisis

Tuesday, July 21, 1:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m.

Cultivating Healthy Teams

  • Identify the essential components of team building, team conflict and collective action as part of a resilient process
  • Understand how to assess and use school climate data to develop team-led supports for students and faculty
  • Improve policies and practices through group agreements framework (shared orientations, values, norms, etc.)
  • Understand the role of the “collective” and the ongoing role of the leader within this

Tuesday, July 28, 1:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m.

Using Data Informed Practices During and Post Crisis

  • Explore how difficult it is to make any kind of decision right now
  • Share ideas about gathering data during a time of crisis (when not enough data is present, the right data cannot be found, there is no data you can trust, or you are facing a combination of all three scenarios)
  • Practice employing deliberate decision-making by slowing down and contextualizing multiple school variables (strategic decision-making)
  • Humanizing data so that it represents the ecology of the child

Building Capacity by Active Listening and Leveraging Empathy

  • Empower student voice by creating respect and safety for all
  • Building communication bridges within the school and throughout the community
  • Develop new messaging/vision plans that include opportunities for service-learning
  • Understand how to use empathy to inform equitable practices (learn more about kindness acts and social connection)

Tuesday, August 11, 1:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m.

Sustaining Positive and Healthy School Culture

  • Understanding effective communication and transparency around decision-making
  • Equity Challenges and establishing strong supports to address such challenges & avoid further inequity
  • Exploring the relationship between equity and caring in the school leadership role
  • Share strategies to implement active parent outreach and education
  • Community connections to support families and students (mental health, basic needs)
  • Consider how this crisis has created opportunities for change
  • Bias training/address issues related to Coronavirus prejudice (understand how bias will manifest after the pandemic/return to school)

About the Speaker

Lisa L. Minicozzi

Lisa L. Minicozzi, EdD, Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education and Program Director for Educational Leadership in the College of Education and Health Studies at Adelphi University. A former elementary school teacher and K-5 principal, Dr. Minicozzi values working with teacher and school leader candidates to prepare them for teaching in today’s diverse and complex early childhood classrooms. She is a NYS Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) trainer, who coaches a number of teaching professionals on how to create positive learning environments for children.
