In these tense, polarized times, it’s important to consider the impact that all this tension has on our children and our classrooms. Ken Anderson, a speech language pathologist who works at Walt Whitman High School and is studying for his Ph.D. in Speech-Language Sciences and Disorders at Adelphi University, writes about the effect of political and cultural strife in high school classrooms, and talks about the insights he gleaned from a thought-provoking discussion he had with his high schoolers.
“These boys needed to understand the evolution of language and the implications of using certain words,” Anderson writes.
