Dear Adelphi Community,

Recent tragic events over the weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia remind us all much work still needs to be done in the area of race in America. They remind us of the deep wound of racism that has scarred our nation for many centuries. These reminders call on all of us to reject racism and hate, as well as acts that promote expressions of white supremacy and white nationalism that too often weaponize racism.

As we move forward into the new academic year, let us join together as a unified community to denounce acts of hate and embrace each other as equals. I am sure that in the coming months there will be opportunities for us to reaffirm our commitment to justice, equality and to each other. Yes, it is time to acknowledge and confront past and present injustices; it is also time to look to a future that proactively embraces peace and the celebration of diversity.

Our Class of 2020 and our upcoming Class of 2021 are the two most diverse in the history of Adelphi. This is a sign, and a promise, that Adelphi will celebrate, honor and value diversity—in our policies, on our campus and in spirit.
