Dear Adelphi Social Work Community:
We write to communicate to all members of our community, in particular those who have been directly affected by the White House’s recent discriminatory Executive Order on immigration and refugee settlement, that we are in solidarity with you. We are committed to finding ways to properly and fully respond to the mean-spiritedness and exclusions that have been realized in our national policies on immigration.
For now, we are not only compelled to speak out, against discrimination and oppression, but also to act to end injustice in all its forms. The Social Work Code of Ethics requires us to challenge injustice and to promote the dignity and worth of all human beings.
As faculty, administrators and staff, we affirm our commitment to make our school a place that not only promotes learning but also honors and respects differences, regardless of religious beliefs and national identity. We are committed to work with our partner agencies, to ensure that our students feel secure and are able to learn in a safe environment. We will strive to support and advocate for all members of our community who are affected in the days and weeks ahead.
In uncertain times like these, our best antidote to hate and fear is to reach out to one another to express our solidarity with each other. We are all members of the Adelphi social work community. We will stand together in coalition with the vast and growing movement of concerned individuals and groups who are advocating fervently to protect the civil and human rights of all persons and communities who have been egregiously, unjustly targeted by this new administration’s policies.
