Adelphi University’s Department of Exercise Science, Health Studies, Physical Education and Sport Management has been selected to host the 2019 International Association for Physical Education in Higher Education (AIESEP) Conference. Founded in 1962, AIESEP is a professional association devoted to the promotion of physical education worldwide.
The conference itself is expected to attract 400-500 leading scholars in kinesiology and physical education from around the world. Ron Feingold, Professor Emeritus at Adelphi, served as president of AIESEP from 1998-2006 and was a member of the board from 1976-2006.
“It is a huge honor to Adelphi University in hosting this conference, and we expect that it will be one of the most successful conferences for AIESEP,” said Feingold. “It is an exceptional opportunity for our students and local teachers and faculty to meet with and interact with these leading scholars.”
AIESEP holds much international appeal; The association has links to the International Olympic Committee.
“The conference, when hosted by other countries, is a highlight for that country,” said Feingold. “When in England, the host was Princess Anne, when in Spain the host was King Carlos, when in Israel, a keynote speaker was Shimon Perez.”
Adelphi has hosted two previous conferences: the first in 1985 and the second in 1998. When Adelphi hosts for the third time in 2019, it will give the University the distinction of hosting more AIESEP conferences than any other university.
“Being awarded to host this international conference will bring national and state recognition and prestige to Adelphi, and in doing so will attract new students,” Feingold said. “Not only international, but local students as well.”
