Expanding Career Horizons and Prepping Students for the Healthcare Industry
—2nd Annual Mentoring in Medicine Day on Saturday, April 30, 2016—

WHAT:

There is a critical shortage of diverse physicians and other healthcare professionals. According to the American Association of Medical Colleges, while racial and ethnic minorities make up approximately 25 percent of the U.S. population, they make up only six percent of practicing physicians and only 12 percent of U.S. medical school graduates. To expose underrepresented students to careers in healthcare, Adelphi University will host the 2nd Annual Mentoring in Medicine Day on Saturday, April 30. More than 200 middle school to college students as well as teachers and parents will convene to gather information and participate in fun, hands-on activities while learning about health and science concepts. This immersion experience reinforces that biomedical careers are attainable options for everyone.

Lynne Holden, MD, president of Mentoring in Medicine, Inc. said: “Students need to be exposed early to the wonderful opportunities provided by a biomedical career.  Mentoring in Medicine teaches students the joy of learning science while helping them to build a strong academic foundation and have fun.”
