Reason for Policy

This policy outlines the guidelines relating to the work life programs provided to Adelphi employees.

Policy

Adoption Leave – (applies to full-time non-union and Public Safety employees only)

  • Adelphi University provides adoption leave to full-time non-union and public safety employees, who have worked for the University for at least one month for adoption in order to care for the child. This leave can only be utilized if the employee does not qualify for leave under New York State Paid Family leave or a family leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (employed for at least 12 months and has worked 1,250 hours during the 12-month period prior to the start of a leave period) and upon approval of the supervisor.
  • Eligible employees will be allowed to take up to a maximum of eight (8) weeks of unpaid leave in order to care for a child being adopted by the eligible employee. Employees may supplement their unpaid leave with accrued vacation or personal days. A 30-day Leave of Absence cannot be added to the Adoption Leave.
  • Adelphi will continue to provide insurance benefits for eligible employees for the term of this leave, at the active employee rate, as long as the eligible employee continues to make the required contributions on a timely basis. If the employee does not return from Adoption leave, he or she will be required to reimburse the University for the full cost of benefits provided during the leave, including the portion of cost paid for by the University.

Adult Fitness Program

  • Our Adult Fitness Program offers an individualized approach with tailored exercise programs, nutrition counseling, and recreational activities.
  • We offer a team that includes exercise physiologists and staff members certified by the American College of Sports Medicine who perform comprehensive fitness evaluations and develop individualized programs. Participants are motivated to achieve their fitness goals as they learn how to exercise properly, efficiently, and safely.
  • Memberships are available on a limited basis to University faculty, staff and students. All participants must be over the age of 18. Entry into the program is contingent upon the approval of the individual’s personal physician. A physician’s clearance form must be submitted in order to participate in the exercise program.

Alice Brown Early Learning Center (ELC)

  • Adelphi’s Alice Brown Early Learning Center provides a wonderful opportunity to parents of children 18 months to 5 years of age. All faculty, staff and students are eligible to have their children attend ELC at reduced employee rates.
  • Easy payroll deduction for employees to pay for tuition
  • Dependent Care Spending Account allows for a maximum of $5,000 to be funded through payroll on a pre-tax basis to help offset costs for tuition in the (ELC)
  • Credit Card Payment (Mastercard or Visa) is accepted for tuition for ELC

Campus Recreation Facilities

  • Adelphi’s recreation facilities support a wide range of activities.
  • Attractive and airy, the space is both comfortable and functional, for both fitness and leisure.
  • The recreation facilities are open at no cost to current, faculty, administration and staff with valid ID. All participants are required to present their ID when entering the facilities. In addition, IDs may be requested at several locations such as the gym, pool, and fitness center during peak times.

Family and Medical Leave (FMLA)

  • Eligible employees may take up to 12 weeks of an unpaid leave during any 12 month period for one or more of the following:
    • Birth or Placement of Child
    • Care for Sick Family Member
    • Eligible Employees Own Illness
    • Qualifying exigency (urgency) arising out of the fact that the spouse, son, daughter, or parent of the employee is on active duty

Paid Leave (Applies to full-time faculty members only and runs concurrent with Family and Medical Leave (FMLA)

  • Adelphi University will provide full-time faculty up to six months of paid leave for members who are sick/disabled, including but not limited to the disability related to the birth of a child. A health care provider must certify that the faculty member is unable to perform his/her duties and certification must be provided to the Office of Human Resources.
  • Parental leave is granted to any full-time faculty member (male or female) who becomes a parent (birth or adoptive). The faculty member is entitled to six (6) credits of “parental release time” for the purposes of bonding with a child. The release time may be taken in the semester that the child is born or adopted or in the following semester. In addition, the contract provides an opportunity for additional leave time to be taken by anyone who qualifies for time under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) by one or more of the following: i) banking credits (hours previously taught for which the faculty member was not paid , ii) shifting workload to the future, and iii) buying back time.

Paid Leave for Disability (Applies to all employees except faculty members and runs concurrent with Family and Medical Leave (FMLA)

  • Employees shall be entitled to receive one-half salary for a maximum period of up to 26 weeks with proper medical evidence of such illness or injury. Eligible employees are paid full salary for the first five days that they are out using sick time, if they have sick time available. As of the sixth consecutive day out, they are paid ½ pay in disability pay and ½ pay by using any sick, personal and accrued vacation time that may be remaining. Once time is exhausted employees are paid at ½ disability pay only.

Dependent Care Spending Account – (applies to all full time non-union, faculty and public safety employees only)

  • Provides a way for employees to put money away through payroll deduction (maximum $5,000) on a pre-tax basis to cover dependent care expenses that are not covered or reimbursed by any benefit plan.
  • Eligible dependents include dependent child(ren) under age 13; and/or a disabled spouse or other disabled tax-qualified dependent who spends at least eight hours a day at home.
  • Eligible expenses include care at licensed nursery schools, day camps (not overnight camp), and child care centers which provide day care and household services (related to the care of the elderly or disabled adults or children who live at home) provided by a housekeeper, maid, cook, etc., as long as the individual is partly responsible for the well-being and care of the qualified dependents.

Adelphi Health and Wellness Committee

  • The Adelphi Health & Wellness Committee’s goal is to promote education on wellness topics.
  • The committee sponsors an annual health fair as well as four lectures each semester on a variety of health topics.
  • The Wellness site keeps the community informed about Adelphi’s health and wellness initiatives, offers links to valuable resources, and brings awareness to wellness events sponsored by partner departments at Adelphi.

The Adelphi Parenting Institute

The Institute for Parenting is an interdisciplinary center established to ensure and enhance the health and well-being of children by helping to support, improve, and develop the capacity of their parents and others who exert significant influence on their development such as service providers, teachers, doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and other community leaders to provide nurturing and developmentally appropriate environments within a culturally sensitive framework.

Services Include:

  • Consultation for mental health, behavioral, developmental concerns
  • Comprehensive observational, relational, developmental evaluation
  • Child focused parent therapy
  • Child-parent psychotherapy with video guidance
  • Parent education and guidance

Employer Assisted Housing Program

  • Adelphi has joined forces with the Long Island Home Works Partnership to offer full-time employees with three years of service (who meet program qualifications) up to $47,000 in down payment assistance and $35,000 for repairs to help buy a home. Adelphi also provides an additional $5,000 in funds and Nassau County provides $12,000 from the New York State Affordable Housing Corporation (AHC) and Homeownership and Economic Stabilization for Long Island Program (HELP Long Island).

  • Most of the On-site Summer Camps offer discounts to employees.
