Personal Statement

My Ph.D. research dissertation focuses on enhancing the patient experience in shared decision-making and improving the quality of care for individuals with chronic kidney disease. More than 700,000 Americans suffer from end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This life-limiting condition carries a high cost of health care utilization and significant life-altering burden and mortality. There is growing evidence to suggest that patients with Chronic Kidney disease are often uncertain in selecting the best treatment choices based on the patient's values or preferences. And may result in undesirable post-decisional consequences. The inconsistency in education practices and evidence of patients not being involved in shared decision-making indicated the need for research in this area. PhD. in Nursing will allow the exceptional desire in me to identify the learning needs of students from diverse backgrounds and assist them according to their learning needs creating a respectful teaching and learning environment.

In order to create a learner-centered environment in the classroom, it is my goal as a teacher to encourage my students to pursue their own areas of interest in learning and critical thinking. I was inspired by Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy and his contribution to educational transformation. Freire gave education with the mission of awakening people with a practice of freedom. He advocated theory and practice-based educational ideas, which include the theory of conscientization and dialogue, criticizing banking education. This kind of teaching is not imposed from the top but takes place through problem-posing education between educators and educate. Based on Freire's theory, I will prepare my lesson plans, considering the interconnection between the student's knowledge, culture, and learning abilities. The subject matter will be discussed in the class by encouraging dialogue and creative thinking.
