Teaching Philosophy
Teaching Philosophy
The aspect of teaching that inspires me most is generating excitement about and interest in the social world. To foster students’ exploration of and reflection on their explanations for “why things happen the way they do” affirms our human ability to make sense of social patterns and realities. Doing this elevates their capacity to have an impact on the world in which they live. Providing students with tools for critical thinking in an analysis of society equips them to consider experiences that they have every day but most likely do not think about in relation to social patterns – the core of sociological inquiry. It equips them to know that their own ideas, voice, and actions matter. It is a true actualization of the intersection between structure and agency – to understand context yet have an awareness of the possibilities of intentional and conscious deliberate action.
The opportunity to explore subject matter such as “race,” “inequality,” “power,” “coloniality” or “democracy” opens possibilities for students to make sense of the world in which they live. This process allows for the examination of contemporary realities on the local and global level, as well as within the context of history. Through discussion, readings, and a variety of types of assignments, I seek to engage students so they gain knowledge and build confidence in their own ability to conduct critical analyses of the social world.
In the process of engagement, I aim for students to develop their ability to integrate new awareness, interpretations and explanations for social phenomena into their understanding of society. Sometimes this deepens what they already know or think. At other times, this learning may conflict with basic tenets of their worldview and unsettle how they think about social patterns. Either way, this process often fosters a realization that conscious living and intellectual engagement can be extremely satisfying, as well as useful. My goal is to develop curiosity and confidence in their capacity to be thinkers, analysts, and actors, more so than to have students’ perspectives mirror my own.
My teaching philosophy prioritizes understanding where individuals begin their academic journeys (starting from their own lived experiences) and the paths they need to travel to pursue knowledge, acquire skills and master the ability to analyze and interpret society. I particularly value curiosity, questioning, and an interest in making sense of the social and material world.
For social scientists, particularly sociologists, inquiry into social patterns provides an opportunity to explore what happens at the systemic, structural and institutional levels, and provides a context for understanding lived experiences. This also allows for consideration of the implications of everyday application of their worldview and perspectives.
My teaching aims at engagement with the meaning, implications, and significance of social facts, forces, contexts and realities. My goal is to excite them about the power of revelation and critique that to me, opens one’s mind to that which is possible, including the extraordinary and the marvelous. I work to create an environment where what students learn in my class has relevance in their everyday lives.
